Tide Rolled oVeršŸ¤Æ

šŸ—‘ļøGarbage in, garbage out. Trash-talk is cheap.

The Tide rolled in and wanted to treat Vandy as an FCS šŸ«¢team. (Seriously, check out what they said pre-game!) The pre-game trash talking didnā€™t end well. In shocking fashion, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide saw their national ranking take a significant hit last weekend as they suffered an unexpected, embarrassing defeat to (what used to be?) perennial SEC basement dwellers Vanderbilt. The Commodores took command over Alabama and sailed their way to a 40-35 victory.

The only thing crazier would have been the 1-3 NY Football Giants traveling to Seattle and beating the 4-1 Seahawks at Lumen Fieldā€¦.šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

We caught up with Adam ā€œThe ATMā€ Thompson from bookies.com. Adam is a senior handicapper and has hit 57% of his posted bets this year.

What brought you to this industry? I placed my first wager back in 1994 when I was in college, so sports betting as been part of my life for 30 years. I worked mostly in newspapers and didnā€™t get officially involved in it from a professional level until I joined Covers.com as a freelancer in addition to a full-time job as a sports editor of a major newspaper, then became the second-ever full-time handicapper for SportsLine & CBSSports.com. Iā€™ve been at Bookies.com for five years.

What advice would you give to a new sports bettor? Budget. Find a bankroll strategy that fits for you and donā€™t veer sharply from it. Donā€™t chase lost money with more money. If you double-up on a wager because you lost your last wager, it probably wonā€™t work out.

Sports betting can be a fun form of entertainment, it makes any game more interesting, and thatā€™s how it should be approached. The goal should be to earn ā€œdinner outā€ money, not ā€œnew carā€ money.

Best sports betting tip? Study matchups over trends. How does a pitcher fare against the hitters in his lineup specifically? How do receivers/corners and O-line/D-line compare? Is one NBA team monsters on the glass, one doesnā€™t get back in transition, etc.  Trends are fun ā€“ The Magic are 12-4 ATS on Wednesdays against Western Conference opponents ā€“ but theyā€™re just trends. Trends break.

What is your favorite bet to place? Iā€™m boring in that I prefer the basic against-the-spread for football and basketball and moneyline for baseball. When studying games I will often find a player to back on a prop, especially in the NFL.  My goal is to hit 2-of-3 every night, or 3-of-5 every night; in other words, make a profit. If I can brag a little, that happens often. That strategy also keeps me from throwing money at parlays.

What professional athlete do you want to meet most? I met and interviewed many, many professional athletes in my 20 years of working for daily newspapers, from Shaq to Michael Jordan to Tiger Woods to Brett Favre. Whoā€™s left? My kidā€™s favorite athlete is Fernando Tatis Jr., and heā€™s certainly one of the more fun MLB players to watch now, so Iā€™ll go with Tatis on my kidā€™s behalf.

TRIVIA
 šŸŒ Employee of the MonthšŸŒ

Robert Salehā€™s firing on Tuesday marks the very first time NY Jets owner Woody Johnson has fired a head coach in the middle of a season in his 25 years as owner. The last head coach the Jets had to replace mid-season was Lou Holtz back in 1976.

Rumors are swirling about why it was done mid-season. And what exactly was talked about during that Monday night phone call with Woody Johnson and his quarterback? Perhaps we will never know the exact reason for the quick dismissal, or perhaps a look at some recent history may reveal a contributing factor:

Do you know what 2 out of the last 6 mid-season head coach firings have in common?
